Van de Graaf, Robert Jemison, 1901-1967
Robert Van de Graaff papers, 1928-1948 (bulk 1943-1946).
Collection includes correspondence with scientists and engineers, including Vannevar Bush and Karl T. Compton, and the British Central Scientific Office, government officials including the Office of Scientific Research and Development, and manufacturers; and drawings of projects Van de Graaff worked on at MIT, including the generator at Round Hill, and the construction of the 5 MeV electrostatic generator. Also included are correspondence, reports, contracts, and drawings about the High Voltage Radiographic Project he directed for the United States government during World War II; and memoranda and information about courses he taught in the MIT Department of Physics, 1937-1947.
Robert Jemison Van de Graaff, 1901-1967, B.S. 1922, M.S. 1923, University of Alabama; B.Sc. 1926, Ph.D. 1928, Oxford University, was a research associate at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, 1931-1934, and associate professor of physics, 1934-1960. At MIT he designed the large air-insulated 5 MeV electrostatic accelerator used for several decades for a variety of nuclear and radiographic studies. During World War II he directed the High Voltage Radiographic Project at MIT for the U.S. Office of Scientific Research and Development. His research focused on the development of the high voltage generator and its applications in high energy research, industry, and medicine. In 1960 he left MIT to become chief scientist at the High Voltage Engineering Corporation (HVEC), a company which he co-founded with Denis M. Robinson and John G. Trump in 1946 to supply high voltage accelerators for use in nuclear structure research, cancer therapy, and radiation processing.
