Considered part of mathematics and engineering when the university first opened in 1870 and, as of 2017, gives formal instruction on campus and provides research and graduate training at at large astronomical telescopes at Perkins and Radio Observatories near Delaware, Ohio and Lowell Observatory in Flagstaff, Arizona.
