Recordings are from a James Franck Symposium called "The Socially Responsible Scientist and Public Policy," held December 9, 1975 in Ida Noyes Hall. It was sponsored by the Center for Policy Study at the University of Chicago, and marked the opening of an exhibit of the James Franck Papers at the Joseph Regenstein Library. The morning session, "Historic Perspectives from the Atomic Scientists," included remarks from Alvin Weinberg, Robert R. Wilson, Arnold Ravin, Robert Sachs, John Simpson, and Arthur Steiner. The afternoon session, "Social Responsibility toward Genetic Information and Life Cycle Modification," included remarks from DeWitt Stetten, Jr., R. Stephen Berry, Albert Dorfman, James Gustafson, Stephen Toulmin, Karl Weintraub, and Franklin Zimring. Tapes 7-76-(11-12) include an unedited version of the morning session. Tapes 7-76-(13-14) include an edited version of the morning session. Tapes 7-76-(15-16) include an edited version of the afternoon session.
