In this interview George Siscoe discusses topics such as: his childhood in Michigan, Pennsylvania, and New Jersey; studies at Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) (BS, Physics, 1960; PhD, Atmospheric Physics, 1964); worked under Bruno Rossi and later Stanislaw Olbert as graduate student; influenced by Cold War outer space interests; California Institute of Technology as postdoc (1964-68), at Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL) under Leverett Davis, lived with Gerhard Haerendel; return to MIT as professor (1966-68), work on solar wind structure, solar dynamics, magnetosphere, space weather; move to University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA) as full professor (1968-1993) in atmospheric sciences; moves to Phillips Lab (1990-91, 1993-94), then to Boston University as research professor (1993-present); work in magnetosphere; collaboration with Karel Schrijver on a summer school in Boulder; current work in space weather. Discussion on formation of field of space weather studies; major players and major shifts in interest; how change is driven in these fields; community formation.
