John William Strutt Rayleigh and Robert John Strutt Rayleigh collection, 1865-1976.
This collection contains materials pertaining to the professional career of John William Strutt, Third Baron Rayleigh, and his son, Robert John Strutt, Fourth Baron Rayleigh. The John William Strutt material includes: a complete set of his experimental notebooks that pertain to his scientific papers and other topics he researched; published scientific papers regarding light, waves, currents, and acoustics; rough notes and calculations pertaining to his scientific papers; copies of scientific correspondence written to and from Lord Rayleigh; correspondence with Lord Ramsay regarding their research and discovery of Argon; and a series of unpublished notes, calculations, and lectures. The Robert John Strutt material includes: twenty-two original notebooks containing the complete collection of his notes and calculations pertaining to his scientific papers; copies of his published scientific papers; publications by or about him containing summaries and abstracts of his scientific writings; and a biography he wrote of his father, John William Strutt. Finally, there are numerous letters and papers, most of which were written by or to John Howard, Chief Scientist at AFCRL, regarding the Rayleigh Collection and dedication of the collection at AFCRL.

Director of Cavendish Laboratory, Cambridge University (1879-1884); on the natural philosophy faculty at Royal Institution of Great Britain (1887); Cambridge University chancellor (1908); and a founder of the National Physics Laboratory, Teddington, England.
Robert John Strutt, Fourth Baron Rayleigh: Physicist (atmospheric optics). On the physics faculty at Imperial College, London (1908-1919). Died 1947.
