The records of the Education Office documents programs relating to astronomy education in high schools and colleges, teacher resource programs, and the Visiting Professor Program. Collection is primarily of records documenting the Visiting Professor Program (1962-1973) renamed the Harlow Shapley Visiting Lectureship in Astronomy program (1974-1984); includes individual files for each participant in the program arranged alphabetically within the year of participation. Also included are files of Correspondence; Education Committee and other committee meeting files; subject files; and four volumes listing American Astronomical Society astronomers willing to act as consultants to the Earth Science Curriculum Project, a summer institute for science teachers held in 1970.
Founded in 1899 as the Astronomical and Astrophysical Society of America, in 1914 the name was changed to the American Astronomical Society. Its purpose is the advancement of astronomy and closely related branches of science. The Society became an Associate Member of the American Institute of Physics in 1958, and has been a full Member Society since 1966. A department of the American Astronomical Society, the mission of the Education Office is to optimize the contributions of both the AAS and its members to enhance science literacy, provide encouragement and to broaden educational opportunities for all.
