Viking Project records, 1969-1977.
This collection contains Viking Project records generated by Langley Research Center, Martin Marietta Corporation, and the Jet Propulsion Laboratory. The collection consists of records in the form of handwritten notes, correspondence, weekly reports, presentations, systems engineering reports, IOMs, meeting minutes, mission design planss, drawings, and presentations, both permanent and temporary records.
Viking was the culmination of a series of missions to explore the planet Mars. Viking was designed to orbit Mars and to land and operate on the planet's surface. National Aeronautics and Space Administration's (NASA) Langley Research Center in Hampton, Virginia, had management responsibility for the Viking project from 1968 to 1978, when the Jet Propulsion Laboratory assumed the task.
