Voyager Project Office documents collection, 1973-1990.
The collection includes materials generated by the Voyager Project Office, from 1973 to 1990, filed chronologically. The files consist of reports, documents, interoffice memoranda, plans, computer printouts, and master copies of reports.
Project Voyager was a dual spacecraft long-range mission that conducted a "Grand Tour" of the Outer Planets. The spacecraft took advantage of a rare planetary alignment that occurs every 176 years. The huge distance between the planets was overcome by using gravity-assisted trajectories to take advantage of the planetary alignment. The project, originally called "Mariner Jupiter/Saturn 1977" (MJS77) was approved by the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) and Congress in June 1972. MJS77 was renamed Voyager in 1977, slightly before the first launch date.
