The Joanne Malkus Simpson papers consist of reports, articles, lectures, programs and correspondence by Simpson related to her work in meteorology at Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution (WHOI).
Meteorologist. First woman to earn a Ph.D. in the field of meteorology, University of Chicago, 1949. Affiliations include: the U.S.Weather Bureau, University of California at Los Angeles, University of Virginia, Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution, and National Aeronautics and Space Administration's Goddard Space Flight Center, Greenbelt, Md. As the chief scientist for meteorology at the Goddard Space Flight Center, she was in charge of a project to measure rainfall over the global tropics. Joanne (Gerould) Simpson was born in 1923.
