PhD in physics, University of Chicago (1951); staff physicist at Los Alamos Scientific Laboratory (1951-1959) and Group and Division Leader for the Controlled Thermonuclear Researhc Division (1959-1977); joined University of Washington as professor of nuclear engineering, where he taught fusion engineering and plasma physics. Research focused on experimental and theoretical plasma physics, and on fusion reactor design.
