American astronomer and Harlan J. Smith Centennial Professor of Astronomy (Emeritus), University of Texas at Austin. Served as chairman of UT Department of Astronomy (1994-1998). Also was Principal Investigator for the Hubble Space Telescope Astrometry Science Team, which advised the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA).
