Norman Hodgson Baker, Jr. (1931-2005): a founder of the modern stellar pulsation theory, president of the Variable Star Commission 27 of the International Astronomical Union (1982-1985) and editor of Astronomical Journal.Received BA from University of Minnesota (1952) and PhD from Cornell (1959). Worked at the Max-Planck-Institut f r Physik und Astrophysik, Convair Science Research Laboratory in San Diego, and NASA (National Aeronautics and Space Administration) Goddard Institute for Space Studies in New York, the Institute for Advanced Study at Princeton, the Astronomy Department at Yale, the Physics Deptartment at New York University (NYU) and Columbia University (1965-2002).
