American Physical Society. Annual Meeting (2017: Washington, D.C)
Physics Outreach and Physics History [sound recording], 2017 January 30.
Audio recording of session S2 of the April 2017 annual meeting of the American Physical Society, held in Washington, DC in January 2017. This session was chaired by Rebecca Thompson, American Physical Society. Talks (and speakers) include: "The IceCube MasterClass: providing high school students an authentic research experiment" (Silvia Bravo Gallart, Ellen Bechtol, David Schultz, Megan Madsen and Jean DeMerit); "Science Behind Bars: Reaching Inmates from Rikers Island" (Agnes Mocsy); "Growing Physics and Astronomy Public Outreach in Montreal" (Gabrielle Simard and Kelly Lepo); "Sharing the Wonder of Gravitational Waves" (Joey Shapiro Key); "Quantum Mechanics for Everybody: An autonomous MOOC on EdX for nonscientists" (James Freericks, Dylan Cutler, and Lucas Vieira-Barbosa); "Reviving Complementarity: John Wheeler's efforts to apply complementarity toward a quantum description of gravitation" (Paul Halpern); "Discrete Space-Time: History and Recent Development" (David Crouse); "Soviet Hadron Collider" (Dmitri Kotchetkov). Topics discussed include education, public outreach, gravitational waves, Laser Interferometer Gravitational-Wave Observatory (LIGO), quantum mechanics, John Wheeler, complementarity, Niels Bohr, space-time, Albert Einstein, Henri Bergson, high energy physics, hadron colliders, superconductivity, accelerators, and the Soviet Union.
This professional society of educators, industrial and government research workers, and students of physics and related fields, was established in 1899 to promote the advancement and diffusion of the knowledge of physics. It was a founding Member Society of the American Institute of Physics. The American Physical Society (APS) meetings are a forum for scientists to gather and share research results on a wide range of physics and physics-related topics.
