American Physical Society. Annual Meeting (2017: Washington, D.C)
Transitions in Physics and Related Fields from the Late 19th Century to Today [sound recording], 2017 January 28.
Audio recording of session B10 of the April 2017 annual meeting of the American Physical Society, held in Washington, DC in January 2017. This session was chaired by Catherine Westfall, Michigan State University. Talks (and speakers) include: "Before New Big Science: Alfred O. C. Nier and the Resurrection of Mass Spectrometry" (Joseph Martin); "Across the Divide: From the One Galaxy Universe to the Expanding Universe" (Robert Smith); "An Attempt to Solve the Controversies Over Elements 104 and 105: A Meeting in Russia, 23 September 1975" (Ann Robinson). Topics discussed include mass spectrometry, Alfred Nier, astronomy, Glenn Seaborg, Al Ghiorso, Lawrence Berkeley Laboratory, Joint Institute of Nuclear Research, Georgy Flerov, Yuri Oganessian, elements 104 and 105: rutherfordium and dubnium.
This professional society of educators, industrial and government research workers, and students of physics and related fields, was established in 1899 to promote the advancement and diffusion of the knowledge of physics. It was a founding Member Society of the American Institute of Physics. The American Physical Society (APS) meetings are a forum for scientists to gather and share research results on a wide range of physics and physics-related topics.
