Henry Norris Russell (1877-1957). Astronomer (stellar evolution, astrophysics of stars, double stars) and administrator. On the astronomy faculty at Princeton University from 1905, director of the observatory, 1912-1947; research associate at Mt. Wilson Observatory, 1922-1942; and at Harvard College Observatory, 1947-1952.
Harlow Shapley (1885-1972). Astronomer (galaxies, photometry, spectroscopy) and administrator. Astronomer, Mt. Wilson Observatory (1914-1921); director, Harvard College Observatory (1921-1952); and on the faculty at Harvard from 1952.
Alexander Vyssotsky (1888-1973). Astronomer, McCormick Observatory, University of Virginia.
Cecilia Payne-Gaposchkin (1900-1979). Phillips Professor of Astronomy at Harvard University (1956-1966) was a pioneer in astrophysics and a leading authority on variable stars.
