History of Physics from Pythagoras to Higgs [sound recording], 2016 April 17.
Audio recording of session M11 of the April 2016 annual meeting of the American Physical Society, held in Salt Lake City, Utah in April 2016. This session was chaired by Alan Chodos, American Physical Society. Talks (and speakers) include: "Value Added: History of Physics in a 'Science, Technology, and Society' General Education Undergraduate Course" (Dwight Neuenschwander); "The Curious Ontology of a Light Higgs Boson" (Michael Riordan); "Revisiting Einstein's Happiest Thought: On Ernst Mach and the Early History of Relativity" (Richard Staley); "Sommerfeld's influence on Einstein's evaluation of Minkowski, 1908 to 1916" (Felix T. Smith); "James Franck and the Experimental Discovery of Metastable States" (Clayton Gearhart); "The Quest for the Primary Substance of Matter" (Demetris Nicolaides); "Proprietary Manned Space Flight Proposals, 1973 to 2013, plus !" (Philip Fisher). Topics discussed include teaching physics history; nuclear weapons; cosmology; Superconducting Super Collider (SSC); Higgs boson; relativity; Albert Einstein; Ernst Mach; Rudolph Minkowski; Arnold Sommerfeld; James Franck; Gustav Hertz; ionization; natural philosophers pre-Socrates; Pythagoras and Democritus; manned space flight; National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA).
This professional society of educators, industrial and government research workers, and students of physics and related fields, was established in 1899 to promote the advancement and diffusion of the knowledge of physics. It was a founding Member Society of the American Institute of Physics. The American Physical Society (APS) meetings are a forum for scientists to gather and share research results on a wide range of physics and physics-related topics.
