Professional experience includes: assistant and physics instructor, University of Gt̲tingen (1927-1930); assistant and physics instructor, Kaiser Wilhelm Institute in Heidelberg (1930-1934); head of research laboratory, Carl Zeiss Company (1934-1945); head of engineering research and development laboratory, Fort Belvoir (1946-1951); associate director of laboratory for insulation research, from associate professor to professor of electrical engineering, director of crystal physics laboratory, emeritus professor of crystal physics, Massachusetts Institute of Technology (1951-1983).
