In this interview, Dimitrios Papaconstantopoulos discusses his perspective on the history of George Mason University. As chair of the physics department from 1974-1977, Professor Papaconstantopoulos focused on attracting students and faculty, and made efforts to build a PhD program. The interview also discusses differences between American and European physics education.

Professional experience includes: from assistant professor to professor (physics, computational science, materials science), chair of physics department, chair of computational and data science department, George Mason University (1967-); from consultant to research physicist and senior consultant, section head, head of complex systems branch, director of center for computational material science, Naval Research Laboratory (1970-).
