Dudley Observatory records, 1956-present.
The Dudley Observatory modern archives consist of several distinct series.
Administrative Records (1956-1989) consists of various records kept by Rita A. Spenser who was the executive secretary from 1964 to 1997. The bulk of the series is comprised of financial records and correspondence. This series also contains records of the Community Education and Technology Assistance (CETA) contract under which personnel were hired to work at the Radio Telescope site.
Buildings & Apparatus (1957-1987) contains the records of the buildings and equipment owned or leased by the Dudley Observatory. The first sub-series includes leases, maps, floor plans and other records including records of moves and of different sites. A sub-series on the radio telescope at Bolton Landing includes financial records, correspondence, and records dealing with the physical equipment and property. The third sub-series documents equipment used.
Grants & Contracts (1959-1987) includes grants given to the Observatory and contracts of all types.
Friends of the Observatory (1958-1985) documents the fundraising organization of that name, founded in 1958. This series contains correspondence, membership and mailing lists, and information about programs.
Curtis L. Hemenway records (1956-1978) document his time as director of Dudley Observatory. Materials consist of correspondence, subject files, scientific papers and a few audio tapes. The records also document some of Hemenways activities at SUNY (State University of New York), COSPAR (Committee on Space Research of the International Council of Scientific Unions), NYAC and the Albany Institute of History and Art. The bulk of the series constitutes assorted files of research papers and records of Dudley administrative concerns. The COSPAR subseries includes agendas, notes and records of COSPAR meetings from 1962 to 1978, papers presented by Hemenway at the meetings, copies of the COSPAR Information Bulletin, and audio tapes of the IAU meeting that was held in Albany in June 1971.
Douglas S. Hallgren records (1964-1978) document his time as assistant to the director. The bulk of this series consists of financial and contract records. Hallgren also kept files on equipment and property belonging to Dudley.
Henry Hudson Planetarium (1953-1990) This series consists of correspondence, the prospectus and architectural plans for a proposed planetarium in Albany which was never built, though fundraising did begin.
Library (1859-1980, bulk 1966-1980) consists of the administrative and subject files of the Dudley Observatory Library, which began with the establishment of the Observatory and later added items from the Library of the Astronomical Journal and early astronomical works collected by Benjamin A. Gould. It includes subject files and administrative and correspondence files.
Photo Laboratory (circa 1964-1976) records document a photo laboratory has provided microscopic photographs and chemical analysis of particles for micrometeorite experiments,as well as documenting other observatory activities. This series consists primarily of the photographs produced by the photo laboratory.
Skywatch Line (1982-1988) contains the scripts of Skywatch Line.
The Dudley Observatory is an astronomical observatory located in Schenectady, New York and is a entitiy of Union University. The observatory was founded in 1852. It is the oldest independent astronomical research organization in the United States. The Dudley Observatory now offers some research awards for professional research and outreach funding to younger students. It no longer operates an astronomical observatory. The Dudley Observatory was named for Charles E. Dudley of Albany, a former United States Senator (18281833).
