Halban, Hans von, 1908-1964.
Hans Halban papers [microform], 1939-1940.
Research notebooks; correspondence; reports; patents. Halban brought this collection from France after the 1940 German invasion. The notebooks (1939-1940) relate to Halban's work on uranium chain reactions. The correspondence (1939-1940) refers to the funding and procurement of apparatus and radioactive materials (including uranium and radium) for research in chain reactions at the Joliot-Curie laboratory in Paris, questions on fission research, the progress of Halban's and Lew Kowarski's fission experiments, German atomic bomb research, and the possibility of realizing a uranium fission-based explosive device. The reports also document Halban's research in these areas. The patents (1939-1940) are for a polymerization process, and the utilization of thermal energy derived from atomic decomposition. Correspondents include Lǒn Brillouin, Andr ̌Helbronner, Frďřic Joliot, and Lew Kowarski.
Physicist (nuclear physics). Charg'e de recherches, Laboratoire de Chimie Nucleaire, College de France, 1938-1940; leader of British-Canadian team at Montreal Laboratory of Atomic Energy, 1942-1945; and professor of physics, Clarendon Laboratory, University of Oxford, 1946-1956.
