Consists of correspondence (1931-1955) with the astronomer Henry Norris Russell and several earlier letters exchanged with Sir Arthur Stanley Eddington. The Russell correspondence includes much personal material relating to Atkinson's career decisions and Russell's personal life; astronomical topics such as spectroscopy, spectroscopic parallaxes, and the origin of the solar system; and other topics such as referee problems of the Astrophysical Journal, feelings about World War II, de-gaussing research during the war, politics after the war, ballistics research, and conditions at the Royal Greenwich Observatory. The correspondence with Eddington includes discussion of clocks in general relativity, the energy of the sun and stars, and quantum mechanics.
