Hugh L. Dryden memorabilia, circa 1910-1960.
This collection consists largely of materials awarded to Dr. Hugh L. Dryden throughout his career. Included are certificates of membership, government and private citations, photographs of award ceremonies, and miscellaneous articles written by or regarding him. Physical artifacts which go with the citations or awards (such as medals or plaques) are held by the National Air and Space Museum's Division of Space History.
Ph.D. (1920) in physics and mathematics, Johns Hopkins University. National Bureau of Standards Division of Mechanics and Sound (1918-47), the Natilonal Advisory Committee for Aeronautics (NACA) committee member (1921-46) and Director (1947-58), and the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) Deputy Administrator (1958-65). Research included air turbulence, the boundary layer and the development of wind tunnel research. He was one of the founders of the Institute of Aeronautical Sciences (later part of AIAS), active in the International Union of Theoretical and Applied Mechanics (IUTAM), and editor of Applied Mechanics Review and the Journal of the Aeronautical Sciences.
