Smithsonian Institution Polaris Expedition records, 1871-1876.
This collection consists of the records of the Polaris Expedition plus the preparatory work of Dr. Emil Bessels, who oversaw their publication in Scientific Results of the United States Arctic Expedition, 1876.
The Polaris Expedition was undertaken for scientific observation in the Arctic during the period from 1871 to 1873, under the direction of the United States Navy. The Smithsonian was involved, especially in meteorological observations, and acquired part of the records with a view to publishing them.
