Et̲vs̲, Lorǹd, br̀,̤ 1848-1919
Lorand Eotvos Warmelehre: autograph notebook, circa 1868.
These notes, which are in German, were written by Lorǹd Et̲vs̲ most probably while he was attending the University of Heidelberg. In the notebook Et̲vs̲ includes notes regarding: heat; themodynamics; comparisons of water, alcohol and mercury thermometers; linear expansion of glass and various metals from 0 to 100 degrees Celsius; and the thermal expansion of solids and gases. It is illustrated with pen-and-ink sketches of laboratory apparatus and a few diagrams. The text of the last page breaks off in the middle of a sentence suggesting that Et̲vs̲ continued his notes in another notebook.
Hungarian physicist and mathematician. President, Hungarian Academy of Sciences (1889-1905); lectured, Budapest University of Sciences (1871) and later became the rector of the University. In 1950 the University of Budapest was renamed Et̲vs̲ Lorǹd University in his honor. Today he is recognized as one of the important forerunners of the theory of relativity and Einstein published material on Et̲vs̲' work.
