Cornelius A. Tobias papers, circa 1963-1974.
Contains four binders of materials related to the effects of radiation on the human body. Includes Cornelius Tobias's original notes and selected chapter drafts for, "Space Radiation Biology and Related Topics" (1974), co-authored with Paul Todd, his lecture notes for a 1963 medical physics class at the University of California, Berkeley, titled "Physics of Biological Systems", and an article on radiation treatement for cancer cells, "Heavy Particles in Cancer Therapy" (1967), also co-authored with Paul Todd. Also includes one pre-publication review copy of "Evaluation of Potential Radiation Hazards in Manned Space Flight Operations" (eventually published as, "Radiological Factors in Manned Space Flight" (1966)).
Born in Hungary and emigrated to the United States in 1939. He was a founding member of the University of California (UC) Lawrence Berkeley National Lab's Donner Laboratory and a renowned pioneer in studying the biological effects of cosmic rays and other ionizing radiation. In addition to his position with the Laboratory, he was also a professor of medical physics at UC Berkeley.
