Smith, Herbert W. collector.
Herbert Smith collection on J. Robert Oppenheimer, 1921-1974.
Incoming letters; clippings; typescripts; photographs; poetry. This collection was assembled by Herbert W. Smith, an English teacher of J. Robert Oppenheimer at the Ethical Culture School in New York. Following Oppenheimer's graduation, Smith collected materials documenting his life. Incoming letters (1921-1925) from Oppenheimer are personal and reveal his thoughts and experiences as an undergraduate at Harvard University. Also included are letters to Smith, many referring to Oppenheimer, from Francis Furgusson, a schoolmate of Oppenheimer's at Ethical Culture and Harvard. Clippings (1953-1967) and typescripts are biographical reminiscences of Oppenheimer. Photographs are of friends and Oppenheimer at his family ranch in New Mexico.
