Klein, Elias, 1890-
Elias Klein Papers, 1918-1968.
This collection contains reprints from the U.S. Navy Journal of Underwater Acoustics, reports, manuscripts, correspondence, and the findings of Elias Klein on supersonic devices, supersonic methods and underwater acoustics while working with the Navy. The 1918 reports, were prepared by John H. Morecroft, Albert P. Wills, J. A. Anderson, H.D. Babcock and H.J. Ryan describing the World War I Anti-Submarine Detection Investigation Committee research at Columbia University and the Naval Research Station in New London, Connecticut. These reports were used by Klein to write "Underwater Sound and Naval Acoustical Research Before 1939," a three-part series of articles written for the U.S. Navy Journal of Underwater Acoustics in 1966.
Elias Klein was born in Wilno, Poland in 1888. Klein moved to the United States and grew up in New York City. In 1911 he received his Bachelor of Science degree in Physics at Valparaiso University in Indianapolis, Indiana. In 1912, received his Bachelor of Civil Engineering degree in structural engineering. Elias spent five years at Valparaiso University as a physics instructor. He later became a teaching assistant in physics for Yale University where he also received his Ph.D. in physics in 1921. Klein taught at Saskatchewan University and Lehigh University between 1922 and 1927. In 1927, he joined the staff of the Naval Research Laboratory in Washington D.C. in the Sound Division. In 1932, he received a substantial award from the Navy for his pioneering work on the characteristics and applications of piezoelectric crystals and his work on the growth of synthetic rochelle salt and ADP crystals. While at NRL, he organized a centralizing activity to collect, correlate, and disseminate all information in the field of shock and vibration for the Navy. In 1967, Dr. Klein celebrated 40 years of service to the government.
