Bauer, Benjamin B. (Benjamin Baumzweiger), 1913-
Benjamin B. Bauer papers, 1935-1979 (bulk 1967-1978).
Manuscripts; course material; patents; correspondence; memoranda; photographs. Primarily manuscripts (1967-1978) including preliminary drafts and reprints, and some supporting technical drawings. These document Bauer's inventive work primarily at CBS Laboratories, in particular his development of the stereo quadraphonic record system; other topics include underwater sound and communication, the ferromagnetic principles of magnetic recording, and noise pollution. Lectures, quizzes, and other course materials (1967-1978) are from engineering acoustics courses taught at Pennsylvania State University; also, one notebook (1937-1939) mainly of Bauer's calculations. Patents (1940-1976), American and foreign, are for Bauer's inventions mostly in acoustics such as phonographic apparatus, directional microphones and loud speakers, and matrix decoders for quadraphonic sound. Correspondence (1947-1979) is mostly of a routine professional nature with a small portion covering scientific and political topics. Memoranda, press releases, and reports concern work at CBS on acoustics, equipment in use, and patents received. Photographs are of apparatus. Collection also contains calculations, graphs, and other data; Bauer's "Phonographic Biography" (1977); and biographical clippings.
Engineer, then vice president, Shure Brothers (1936-1957); section head, then vice president and general manager, Columbia Broadcasting Systems (CBS) Laboratories (1957-1978); president and director of research, Audio-metric Labs, Inc. (1978-1979).
