This collection documents J. N. Patterson Hume's career as a computer scientist and as a professor of physics. Contains records relating to: biographical information; professional correspondence; research in computer science and related records from articles, talks, published works and teaching; manuscript and typescript for textbook "Physics in Two Volumes" written with Donald Ivey; work in educational television and film; Hume's participation in Spring Review at University of Toronto. This collection does not document Hume's administrative roles within the University of Toronto or professional associations; this collection also does not contain much material relating to the computer science textbooks published by Hume.
James Nairn Patterson Hume. Ph.D., physics (University of Toronto, 1949). University of Toronto, assistant professor of p, professor of computer science, chairman of Department of Computer Science (1975-80), and Associate Dean (Physical Sciences) for the School of Graduate Studies. Hume co-authored nine textbooks on programming languages with R. C. Holt and collaborated with Donald Ivey on a physics textbook and a number of educational television and film programs about physics.
