Files of Robert T. Beyer, first chairman of the Advisory Board (1954-1966), consisting largely of the correspondence dealing with the AIP'a efforts to acquire and translate Russian physics journals. Also includes correspondence which documents a similar interest in Chinese physics journals.
The American Institute of Physics (AIP) began its program of translating Russian physics journals in 1955 with financial underwriting from the National Science Foundation in order to make the results of Soviet physics research widely accessible in the West. In 1981 a similar program was started for Chinese physics journals. The group consists of editors of the translation journals with a member of the AIP Publishing Division serving as secretary.
