Printed matter; correspondence; guestbooks; annual reports; scrapbooks; clippings; ephemera. Of particular interest are the bulletins and reports (1941-1946) issued by the American Institute of Physics (AIP) and its War Policy Committee containing news, data, and recommendations pertaining to the centrality of physicists to the war effort and to the manpower needs of the physics community, and the National Roster of Scientific and Specialized Personnel bulletins issued by the War Manpower Commission on the supply and demand of qualified personnel and the means to conserve or increase the supply and provide for its optimum use. Guestbooks or visitors' registers span the years 1931 to date. Annual reports cover the years 1936 to present. Scrapbooks, which contain promotional materials such as press releases, photographs, and clippings, document anniversaries and symposiums. Clippings relate to the AIP and the physics community. Printed matter (bulk, 1957 to present) includes brochures, division and project newsletters, and conference programs and proceedings. Also includes a crank physics collection containing documents received by the AIP on relativity and other topics, the files of Wallace Waterfall pertaining to the fundraising campaign for the AIP's move to the new building (1956-1959), and ephemera such as a banner and commemorative medallion from the AIP's 50th anniversary celebration in 1981.
The American Institute of Physics (AIP) is a not-for-profit membership corporation chartered in New York State in 1931 for the purpose of promoting the advancement and diffusion of the knowledge of physics and its application to human welfare. Its members are leading societies in the fields of physics and astronomy, and its activities include providing services to its member societies in publishing, finance, and education.
