Lawrence Berkeley Laboratory. Nuclear Science Division
LBL Nuclear Science Division scientist files of Glenn Seaborg, 1961-1975.
Administrative records of Nobel Laureate, Dr. Glenn T. Seaborg. Seaborg was awarded the 1951 Nobel Prize in Chemistry along with Edwin M. McMillan for their discoveries in the chemistry of transuranic (actinide) elements, including the element plutonium. Element 106, named seaborgium, was discovered by Seaborg during his research at Lawrence Berkeley Laboratory (LBL). Seaborg served as Director-at-Large for Lawrence Berkeley Laboratory up until his death in 1999. Seaborg's scientific research and discoveries include: heavy element electronic structure; transuranium and lanthanide elements; periodic table arrangement; patents, including the only ones for a chemical element (americium and curium). He was known as an advocate for science and math education.
The laboratory was founded as the University of California Radiation Laboratory in 1931 by Ernest Orlando Lawrence, a University of California Berkeley physicist who won the 1939 Nobel Prize in physics for his invention of the cyclotron, a circular particle accelerator that opened the door to high-energy physics. It is a United States Department of Energy National Laboratory, operated by the University of California. The name of the laboratory has evolved since its founding: Lawrence Radiation Laboratory (1931-1958), the Lawrence Berkeley Laboratory (1959-1995), and currently the Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory (1995-present).
Glenn Seaborg (1912-1999), American scientist. Ph.D., chemistry (University of California, Berkeley, 1937). Shared the 1951 Nobel Prize in Chemistry with Edwin McMIllan; discovered and co-discovered many elements, including Element 106, which was named seaborgium.
