Lawrence Berkeley Laboratory. Office of the Director.
LBL Office of the Director research and development administrative files of Andrew Sessler, 1973-1980.
These are the official records of the Office of the Director at the Lawrence Berkeley Laboratory (LBL), covering the tenure of the third Laboratory Director Andrew M. Sessler. The records were generated or received by his office and kept by his administrative assistant, Anne Fleming. Andrew Sessler, a theoretical physicist, succeeded Edwin M. McMillian as Director in September 1973. In the early 1970's, Sessler was one of the primemovers in the creation of LBL's Energy and Environmental Research Office (later, Environment and Energy Division) and his directorship was characterized by new and expanding research divisions and research of non-nuclear energy and environmental conservation. In 1975 and 1977, several LBL divisions were reorganized under Director Sessler. The records reflect Dr. Sessler's activities as Director as well as his related research and development interests, including the chairmanship of the Stanford Synchrotron Radiation Project Policy Board, LBL's relations with the University of California, and the United States Department of Energy.
The laboratory was founded as the University of California Radiation Laboratory in 1931 by Ernest Orlando Lawrence, a University of California Berkeley physicist who won the 1939 Nobel Prize in physics for his invention of the cyclotron, a circular particle accelerator that opened the door to high-energy physics. It is a United States Department of Energy National Laboratory, operated by the University of California. The name of the laboratory has evolved since its founding: Lawrence Radiation Laboratory (1931-1958), the Lawrence Berkeley Laboratory (1959-1995), and currently the Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory (1995-present).
