Lawrence Berkeley Laboratory. Nuclear Science Division
LBL Nuclear Science Division 88-inch Cyclotron control room logbooks, 1971-1982.
These logs document the main operations of the 88-inch Cyclotron at the Lawrence Berkeley Laboratory. The logs document daily operations, names of staff on duty, dates, beam lines, maintenance, run condition, and machine readings.
The laboratory was founded as the University of California Radiation Laboratory in 1931 by Ernest Orlando Lawrence, a University of California Berkeley physicist who won the 1939 Nobel Prize in physics for his invention of the cyclotron, a circular particle accelerator that opened the door to high-energy physics. It is a United States Department of Energy National Laboratory, operated by the University of California. The name of the laboratory has evolved since its founding: Lawrence Radiation Laboratory (1931-1958), the Lawrence Berkeley Laboratory (1959-1995), and currently the Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory (1995-present).
The 88-inch Cyclotron is operated by the LBL Nuclear Science Division as a national user facility in support of United States Department of Energy programs. The 88-inch Cyclotron was built from 1958 to 1962 by a group of engineers and scientists under the direction of D. L. Kelly. The 88-inch Cyclotron is a versatile and reliable accelerator for light and heavy ions, and was used in the discovery of new elements 116 and 118.
