University of California, Los Angeles. Department of Astronomy
University of California, Los Angeles Astronomy Department publications, 1887-1977.
This collection contains publications of UCLA's Astronomy Department. Files include both astronomical papers generated by the Department, and publications and bulletins generated by the Lick Observatory. These publications predate the department's involvement with the observatory.
The Department of Astronomy at the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA) has its origins in the 1922 appointment of Frederick C. Leonard, an astronomer, to the Department of Mathematics. In 1931, a separate Department of Astronomy was created. The initial focus of the department was on meteoritics, followed by celestial mechanics, and interplanetary navigation. In the 1950s, the department expanded to include instruction in stellar astronomy and astrophysics. The Department of Astronomy is now the Department of Physics and Astronomy with a Division of Astronomy and Astrophysics.
