American astronomer. Ph.D., astronomy (University of GtĖ˛tingen, 1848). Founder and first editor, Astronomical Journal (1849); director, Dudley Observatory (1855-1859); commissioned the establishment of the National Observatory at Cordoba, Argentina (1870); reestablished the Astronomical Journal (1896).
