Three Mile Island collection, 1979-[ongoing].
Includes papers, correspondence, and newsletters of consumer lobbying groups, which were organized soon after the 1979 accident at the Three Mile Island (TMI) Plant. The collection also contains a comprehensive clippings file from local newspapers, interviews with some 300 residents of the Carlisle, PA area immediately after the accident, tapes of hearings held in connection with the accident and restarts of TMI as well as TV and radio broadcasts, symposia, and other programs relating to TMI. In addition, the records of Three Mile Island Alert (TMIA) and Three Mile Island Public Interest Resource Center (TMRC), two Harrisburg consumer groups most active in their concern over TMI, contain not only correspondence and publications created by the organizations themselves, but also important records of all hearings held with the Nuclear Regulatory Commission and in Pennsylvania courts in connection with the accident and restarts of TMI. John Murdock, a former trustee of TMIA, and resident of Camp Hill, PA, has added his 230 cassette tapes of hearings, TV and radio broadcasts, symposia, and other programs relating to TMI.
A nuclear accident on March 28, 1979 at the nuclear power plant on Three Mile Island (TMI), just 10-miles south of Harrrisburg, PA, focussed national attention on the area. Thousands living near the plant were forced to evacuate. As a result, public concern over the dangers of nuclear power was heightened. In the aftermath of the investigations into the causes of the accident, changes were recommended in reactor licensing and personnel training procedures, as well as in the structure and functions of the Nuclear Regulatory Commission.
