Collection of Gerhard S. Dieke consists of mostly personal items unrelated to his teaching and research at Hopkins. Included are some personal correspondence, travel passes and letters of introduction, notices of conferences, and a bibliography of his personal library. Of interest are Dieke's published articles from "The Evening Sun" (Baltimore, MD) dealing with science and education in the Soviet Union. These were written after a trip to Moscow in 1957. Final items are membership cards in scientific associations and private clubs.
Ph.D., physics (University of California, 1926). Gerhard H. Dieke was an authority on spectroscopy and solid state physics, and a professor and chairman of the physics department at Johns Hopkins University (1930-1965). He was recognized at one of the pioneers in investigating the structure of atoms and molecules by spectroscopic methods. Dr. Dieke was married to astronomer Sally Harrison Dieke (1913-1989), a faculty member at Johns Hopkins (1966-1989).
