Smyth, Henry De Wolf, 1898-1986
Henry De Wolf Smyth papers, 1885-1987.
This collection documents Smyth's work on the Manhattan Project at Princeton University and the University of Chicago, his later published history of the development of the atomic bomb, and his work as Commissioner on the Atomic Energy Commission (1949-1954) and as U.S. Ambassador to the International Atomic Energy Agency (1961-1970). The types of materials include correspondence, speeches, reports, journals, diplomas, medals, and photographs.
Smyth taught physics at Princeton University, 1924-1966, and became chairman of the department in 1935. The Princeton University material includes many files relating to their World War II Office of Scientific Research and Development physics projects, especially the "Isotron".
There is significant material on the uranium section of the National Defense Research Committee (1941) and correspondence with the Office of Scientific Research and Development (1941-1943). There are numerous miscellaneous files as well, such as those on the R. C. Tolman Committee on post-war policy (1944) and the R. S. Mulliken Committee (1944), and files relating to uranium.
There is a series under Smyth's name, which includes papers he gave or read, and data for his proposed scientific mission to London on behalf of the State Department which was not undertaken (1946-1947). The files relating to the "Smyth Report" include research correspondence, successive drafts of chapters, and interesting comments and criticisms from noted scientists.
The series relating to his Atomic Energy Commission work is extensive, including such subject headings as security clearance cases, H-Bomb, Joint Committee on Atomic Energy (U.S. Congress), Los Alamos Scientific Laboratory, Operations Castle and Greenhouse, reactors, trip to Europe (1952), and thermonuclear weapons program (1949-1954).
In addition to documentation of Smyth's professional life, there is personal correspondence, some autobiographical material, and his wife's diaries, containing daily events and references to eminent scientists (1936-1970). There are also photographs, diplomas, and awards.
