Photograph collection relating to physics and allied sciences.
Contains photographs and slides of individuals or artifacts prominent in the history of physics, mathematics, chemistry, astronomy, time-keeping, surveying and geodesy, weights and measures, and meteorology. The collection's strength is in the 19th century. Also included are photographs of museum exhibits, and trade cards and labels of instrument makers. Portions of this collection are held in both the Archives Center and the Division of Physical Sciences, NMAH. The biographical files of men and women of science and technology are arranged alphabetically. Other photographic files are arranged by subject and include: electro-chemistry, weights, cryogenics, time keeping, electricity, physics, mechanics, pneumatics, heat, pressure and vacuum acoustics, wave devices, optics, microscopes, diffraction gratings, spectroscopes, gyroscopes and tops, gauges, paints and varnishes, heating appliances, weights and measures, steelyards, spring scales, beam balances, pan scales, platform scales, liquid and volume measures, meters, and miscellaneous prints, scientific and chemical.
