The bulk of this collection contains newsletters collected by the Continuous Electron Beam Accelerator Facility (CEBAF). Accession 1985.48 includes the Southeastern Universities Research Association's (SURA) proposal for locating a national electron accelerator laboratory at the Virginia Associated Research Campus and the Space Radiation Effects Laboratory. The accession also includes support letters from College of William and Mary President Graves and the proposal prepared by Hans C. von Baeyer. Accession 2008.174 includes proposals and related material which may be duplicated elsewhere in this collection.
The Jefferson Laboratory of the College of William and Mary is located in Newport News, Virginia and is home to the Thomas Jefferson National Accelerator Facility, an underground high-tech machine nearly a mile around. Before being renamed in 1996, the Thomas Jefferson National Accelerator Facility was known as the Continuous Electron Beam Accelerator Facility (CEBAF).
