Fermi National Accelerator Laboratory. Fermilab History and Archives Project.
Fermilab History and Archives Project collection on Fermilab prehistory, 1948-1992 (bulk 1953-1979).
The collection consists of materials related to the early history of Fermilab. Most of the materials deal with the period before ground was broken at the current site. The collection includes materials on early ideas for a national accelerator laboratory, materials on the Western Accelerator Group, materials on the Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory design study for the National Accelerator Laboratory, materials on the controversy over the fact that Illinois did not have an open housing law when it was chosen as the site for the National Accelerator Laboratory, and materials on the history of the Universities Research Association (URA) and the Atomic Energy Commission (AEC).
The Fermilab History and Archives Project began in January 1977 as the Fermilab History Committee, an offshoot of the Fermilab Library Committee. Fermilab's first archivist, Lillian Hoddeson, began collecting materials on the history of Fermilab in January 1978 followed by Adrienne Kolb from 1983 to the early 1990s.
