Association for Women Geoscientists records of the Denver chapter, 1980s-1994.
The collection contains correspondence, minutes, conference programs, agendas, newsletters, brochures, guidelines, receipts, budgets, photographs, and negatives. The Operations manual was produced by AWG for the local chapters and contains information on commitees, meetings, and the histories of the individual chapters. The correspondnece series contains letters that discuss the operation and meetings of the Denver chapter while the Conference series documents conferences from 1982, 1984, and 1992. The administrative records and minutes consists of mintues, membership and committee information, reports, and Executive Committee minutes. The Outreach series includes employment information for the early 1970s, student awards and a speakers bureau, the Printed materials and publicity series contains publicity for the group, chapter newsletters, brochures, and GAEA newsletters, and the Financial records series includes receipts and bank statements. The last series, Photographs, contains color negatives and photographs of a banquet from the 1980s.
The Association for Women Geoscientists was officially founded in 1977 with approxiamtely 50 members in the Bay area of San Francisco. The first chapter formed in 1979 when a group in Denver became associated with the San Francisco group. The Bay area, at first, served as national headquarters for the organization as regional groups developed into recognized chapters. The Association, now headquartered at Menlo Park, Ca., has the following goals: 1)To encourage the participation of women in the geosciences, 2)To exchange technical, professional, and educational information, and 3)To enhance the professional growth and advancement of women in the geosciences. AWG-Denver held its first public meeting on 31 January 1981. The chapter currently holds numerous annual events as well as monthly dinner meetings that cover a variety of geoscience topics. The chapter also publishes a newsletter and sponsors student awards and workshops.
