Environmental Mutagen Society
Environmental Mutagen Society records, 1930-2009.
The Environmental Mutagen Society Records holds the society's administrative documents and correspondence between its members. It also includes publications, research materials, and other documents relating to the society, its sister regional, national and international organizations, and the Environmental Mutagen Information Center. Materials from Oak Ridge National Laboratory's Biology Division and Life Sciences Division are also included in the records. Correspondents include Hermann Muller, Joshua Lederberg, and Alexander Hollaender.
The EMS has a long and notable history, starting with its founding in 1969 by such distinguished scientists as Drs. Alexander Hollaender, Joshua Lederberg, James Crow, James Neel, William Russell, Heinrich Malling, Frederick J. de Serres, and Matthew Meselson, among others. The society was founded to provide a forum for the establishment and support of scientists in the field of environmental mutagenesis. Although the initial focus was on germ-cell mutagenesis, the interests of the society soon expanded to encompass all areas of mutagenesis, including mutational mechanisms, development of test methods, molecular epidemiology, biomarkers, and risk assessment.
