British X-ray crystallographer (1902-1966). Ph.D., physics (McGill University, 1928). Crystallography laboratory of W. H. Bragg (1924-1926); visiting researcher, laboratory of Bertram Eugene Warren at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (1933-1946); instructor, Bryn Mawr College (1936-1949); faculty member, Institute for Cancer Research in Philadelphia (1949-1966). Famous for his development of the Patterson function, a theoretical tool in X-ray crystal structure analysis.
