Scripps Institution of Oceanography Communications Office records, 1927-2010.
Collection 2000-08 (1927-2004) includes biographical files on retired University of California (UC)/Scripps Instition of Oceanography (SIO) staff and faculty including David P. Gardner, William J. Goff, Harold T. Hammel, Francis T. Haxo, Minouri Koide, Otto Orzbach, Frances L. Parker, Walt Waldorf, James Williams, Peter Williams, and Bernard Zetler. The accession includes two 16mm films, and video tapes generated or distributed by SIO Communications Office.
Collection 2005-19 (1992-2002) includes press releases, media clippings, and other files generated by SIO Communications Office during the period 1992-2002. The accession includes three boxes of audio and video recordings, including interviews of Scripps scientists, commercial programs, UCSD-TV programs, recordings of news features and other material featuring SIO, the Stephen Birch Aquarium Museum and Scripps scientists. These recordings were made or acquired by Scripps Communications to document the institution in media.
Collection 2005-34 (1987-2003) includes press releases, media clippings, images of Scripps events, audio and digital files and other material collected or generated by Scripps Communications during the period 1987-2003. The accession includes a substantial amount of material documenting the 1987 groundbreaking for the new pier. The accession includes thousands of 35mm slides of Scripps campus, research, ships, and events. Some of were taken in the 1970s, but most are dated 1987-2002. The accession includes some photographic prints and negatives, and a few color transparencies. A large number of color photographic prints were taken during Scripps Homecoming, and other events celebrating the centennial. The accession includes a few magnetic and digital audio files and some digital photographs on CDs. The audio files record media interviews of Scripps Director Charlie Kennel and scientists including Dan Cayan and William Fenical.
Collection 2005-40 (1967-2008) includes chronological files, news releases and press clippings including departmental records.
Collection 2008-01 (2001-2005) includes records of the SIO Communications Office and contains Monthly Media Logs and Birch Aquarium and Scripps Oceanography News Releases and Clips.
Collection 2008-47 (2003-2004) includes reords of the SIO Communications Office and contains Scripps in the News, Scripps Clips, and Birch Aquarium at Scripps News.
Collection 2008-49 (1966-2009) includes records of the SIO Communications Office dated 1966-2009.
Collection 2010-28 (1991-2004) includes the ATOC (Acoustic Thermometry of Ocean Climate) Project. Includes articles, memos, press clips, publications and correspondence and other materials related to the study.
Collection 2012-47 (2010) includes Scripps clips, news releases, and announcements from 2010, including Explorations and the Birch Aquarium.
Collection 2005-42 (recordings, 1977-1997) includes 9 audiocassette tape and 34 videocassette tape recordings of Scripps Institution of Oceanography personnel on radio or television programs or recorded lectures, as well as SIO public events, or other SIO related content.
Collection 2011-41 (newsletters, 1966-2008) includes the newsletters SIO Information Exchange Bulletin (1966-1972), SIO Information Log (1972), SIO Log (1972-2007), and Scripps Log (2007-).
Collection 2005-46 (awards, 1968-2005) includes awards, plaques, certificates, and medals.
The SIO Public Information Office was established in the early 1950's and was headed by Thomas Manar. Nelson Fuller directed the office from 1965-1978. Fuller was succeeded by his assistant, Jacqueline Parker, who directed the office from 1978-1991. During Parkers tenure, the office was renamed the SIO Public Affairs Office. In 1993, the name of the office was changed to Scripps Institution of Oceanography Communications Office to reflect its affiliation with the UCSD Communications Office, and Cindy Clark became Director of Communications.
