Vannevar Bush papers, 1934-1938.
This small collection of Vannevar Bushs papers covers Bushs work with the National Research Council in the mid- to late-1930s. The work of the Committee on the Relation of the Patent System to the Stimulation of New Industries, of which Bush was a member, is documented in substantial depth in fifteen folders, which make up the bulk of the collection. Bushs work as Chairman of the Research Councils Division of Engineering and Industrial Research is also documented here, in addition to his work with the Committee on Scientific Aids to Learning. Additional folders document the Research Council interdivisional relations, as well as a prospective study for the Federal governments Rural Electrification Administration.
Physicist, engineer, government official, and science administrator. Ph.D. engineering, Harvard University and Massachusetts Institute of Technology (1916). Professional experience includes: instructor of mathematics, assistant professor in electrical engineering and premedical physics, Tufts University (1914-1917); associate professor of electrical power transmission, professor, vice president, dean of engineering, Massachusetts Institute of Technology (1919-1938); president, Carnegie Institution (1938-1955). Co-founded the American Appliance Company, which later became Raytheon Manufacturing Company and continued to evolve into the Metals and Controls Corporation, which manufactured nuclear fuel.
