Herbert Scoville papers, 1947-1985.
The collection includes Scoville's outgoing correspondence, 1975-1985, as well as his newspaper editorials and unpublished writings on weapons control and U.S. defense policy. His papers also contain extensive reference files that he used to provide support for his writings, speeches, and Congressional testimonies relating to arms control. Correspondence and clippings describe his work in arms control with the Pugwash Conferences on Science & World Affairs, the Federation of American Scientists, and other groups. Copies of his numerous editorials, magazine and journal articles, and Congressional testimonies are included, as are copies of his two books, Missile Madness, written with Robert Osborn, and MX: Prescription for Disaster.
Herbert Scoville, 1915-1985, B.A. 1937, Yale; Ph.D. in physical chemistry, 1942, University of Rochester, was a weapons expert for the United States federal government from World War II until 1969. He worked for the Atomic Energy Commission, 1946-1948; was technical director of the Armed Forces Special Weapons Project, 1948-1955; was assistant director and then deputy director of the Central Intelligence Agency (CIA), 1955-1963; and from 1963 to 1969 was assistant director for science and technology of the U.S. Arms Control Disarmament Agency. Scoville was a leader in the arms control and disarmament movement, 1969-1985, as evidenced in his writings, lectures, and organizational work. He cofounded the Arms Control Association in 1971 and was later president, 1979-1985.
