Sakata, Sh ichi, 1911-1970
Shoichi Sakata papers, 1932-1985.
The collection consists of journals, magazines, books, reprints of scientific papers, records of university affairs, research notes and memoranda, drafts and manuscripts of scientific papers, essays, books and talks, correspondence, commemorative material (post-1970), and miscellaneous material which includes photographs and physical objects. There is also assorted material on the following areas of Sakata's activities: Science Council of Japan (SCJ), and sub-committees, Special Committee for Nuclear Study, Subcommittee for Future Plans (SKS), Subcommittee of Preparation for Institute of High Energy Physics (SJC), and Subcommittee of Study System of Future Institute, Special Committee of Atomic Energy, scientists' peace movements, Japan-China relations, the Research Institute for Fundamental Physics steering committee, the Physical Society of Japan, and various international conferences. Although this collection is complemented by some material in the Yukawa Hall Archival Library, which corresponds to Sakata's period of collaboration with Yukawa, neither contain much in the way of biographical information. The correspondence between Sakata, Nishina, Yukawa, Tomonaga and Taketani offer most interest in this respect. Pre-war materials were lot during wartime air raids. A collection of 21 letters and 42 postcards from Sakata to Taketani, for the period 1935-1954, complements the research notes and manuscripts available. A collection of correspondence to S.Sakata (1947-1985), covers his post-war activities and various activities in the mid 1950's.
Student at Kyoto University, graduated in 1933. After graduation he researched under Nishina and Tomonaga at the Institute of Physical and Chemical Research. In 1934, he transfered ot Osaka University and worked with Yukawa developing Yukawa's meson theory. Outside activities include setting up a new democratic laboratory system in Physics Dept. of Nagoya University. He was a member of the steering committee of the Research Institute of Fundamental Physics, and was an important member of the Science Council of Japan.
