This collection documents the personal life and career of Albert R. Hibbs as a manager and scientist at the Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL), the relationships between JPL, the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA), and the California Institute of Technology. Other topics include Richard Feynman, Biosphere 2, Explorer 1, Voyager Project, space flight, and the development of the solar system exploration programs.
American astronomer and astrophysicist (1924-2003). Ph.D., physics (California Institute of Technology, 1955). Most of Hibbs' career was spent at the Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL) in positions such as senior scientist, Office of Plans and Programs, JPL (1967-1969); manager, Transportation Technology Office (1969-1970) and the Program Planning and Coordination (1976-1980); and director, Space Science until 1986. Hibbs hosted and produced scientific radio and television programs for adults and children and was known as the "Voice of JPL. He taught courses at Caltech in physics and government (1965-1974) and was active in a number of projects outside of JPL, including Biosphere 2 (1987-1992) and the Geosphere Project (1989-1995).
